Hydraulic test bench – Pump, motor and hose testing

The test bench is what separates a verified overhaul from a declared repair. A component that has been stripped, cleaned and reassembled may look fine: only a run under load shows whether it actually performs. TFS operates three benches — pumps, motors and cylinders, high-pressure hoses — and issues every customer the test report with the measured values.

Hydraulic pump test bench

An original Bosch Rexroth unit, recertified periodically. This is the bench used to test piston, gear and vane pumps after overhaul, and to verify new pumps before commissioning.

Maximum test pressure470 bar
Maximum flow600 l/min
Installed power120 kW
Largest component testablepumps up to 500 l/min (e.g. Bosch Rexroth A4VSO 500)

Hydraulic motor and cylinder test bench

Also an original Bosch Rexroth unit, periodically recertified. It tests axial and radial piston motors, orbital motors and cylinders. It is the bench that allows TFS to run large motors under load — machines many workshops can strip down but not verify.

Maximum test pressure420 bar
Maximum flow74 l/min
Installed power15 kW
Largest component testedHägglunds MB84 — 1,500 kg, 33,780 cm³/rev displacement, 35/70 rpm

The Viking MB84 is the size benchmark: a radial piston motor delivering roughly 538 Nm of torque for every bar of differential pressure — over 180,000 Nm at 350 bar. See the case study of an MB84 overhaul on an offshore winch.

High-pressure hose test bench

A bench type-approved by O+P (code BC/L2000) dedicated to testing assembled hoses: burst testing and leak verification. It is what allows TFS to certify hoses assembled in house, a recurring requirement in the marine sector and on systems subject to inspection.

Maximum test pressure2,000 bar
Tests performedburst, tightness and leakage
Type approvalO+P — bench code BC/L2000

What is measured during testing

On pumps and motors the bench records the full set of parameters describing the real condition of the component:

  • Flow — what the component actually delivers against its nominal rating
  • Pressure — behaviour under different load conditions
  • Temperature — heating in operation, an indicator of abnormal friction
  • Volumetric efficiency — the parameter that reveals internal wear before it becomes a failure
  • Internal leakage — losses between high and low pressure
  • Noise — often the first symptom the customer notices

The test report

At the end of testing the customer receives a complete test report listing every test performed and the values recorded. It is not a formality: it is what tells you how the component going back into the line performs, lets you compare it against the rating plate and gives an objective reference for later checks.

It is also why an overhaul with instrumented testing carries different weight from a repair without a final run: what comes back with the component is not a statement, but numbers.

Frequently asked questions about testing

Can a component not repaired by TFS be tested?

Yes. Bench testing can be requested as a standalone service, to verify the performance of a new component, of one repaired elsewhere, or of a unit suspected of degradation before refitting it to the system.

Which brands can be tested?

The benches are not tied to a single manufacturer: TFS tests components from Bosch Rexroth, Kawasaki, Hägglunds, Casappa, Danfoss, Parker and others, within the pressure and flow limits given above. This is the advantage of a multi-brand centre over service tied to one brand.

What is the largest component TFS can test?

On the pump bench, units up to 500 l/min such as a Bosch Rexroth A4VSO 500. On the motor bench the benchmark is a 1,500 kg Hägglunds MB84. Beyond these sizes, testing is agreed case by case.

Are the benches certified?

The pump and motor benches are original Bosch Rexroth units, recertified periodically. The hose bench is type-approved by O+P, bench code BC/L2000.
