The cylinder is the most exposed component of the system: it operates in direct contact with the environment, withstands lateral loads, and is subject to pressure shocks. Repairing a cylinder is not simply a matter of replacing gaskets; it is a structured procedure that includes checking the straightness of the piston rod, the condition of the chrome plating and the bore of the cylinder liner, inspecting the head and end cap welds, and replacing the seals with Hallite or equivalent original gaskets. TFS works on standard industrial cylinders, large-bore custom cylinders for presses and the steel industry, Moog servo-hydraulic actuators for test benches and dynamic applications, and marine cylinders certified by RINA and Bureau Veritas. For cylinders no longer available as original parts, TFS designs and manufactures custom replacement parts to ensure compatibility with the existing system. Final testing includes leak tests at operating pressure and at increased test pressure, with documentation and issuance of a signed report.

Industrial, custom, and servo-actuator cylinders: areas of application

TFS works on bolted and welded cylinders in accordance with ISO 6020 and ISO 6022 standards, on large-bore custom cylinders for presses and steel plants, on Moog servo-hydraulic actuators used in test benches and simulators, and on marine cylinders with RINA or Bureau Veritas class certification. The choice between refurbishment and rebuild depends on the condition of the rod (straightness, chrome plating) and the cylinder liner (ovalization, scoring). When the bore exceeds reworkable tolerances, TFS offers a complete rebuild using equivalent materials.

Overhaul procedure: rod, cylinder liner, seals

Each cylinder received is disassembled, dimensionally inspected, and photographed. The rod is checked for straightness and the condition of the chrome plating; if necessary, it undergoes industrial re-chroming at qualified suppliers. The sleeve is ground and lapped to restore surface tolerance. The seals are replaced with Hallite kits or original equivalents according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Reassembly includes certified torque values, a leak test at operating pressure, and a leak test at increased pressure (typically 1.5 times the nominal pressure).

Custom Rebuilding for Discontinued Cylinders

When an original cylinder is no longer available, TFS designs and manufactures the replacement while maintaining the mechanical and hydraulic interfaces of the existing system. The process includes dimensional measurement of the original cylinder, material validation based on operating pressure, selection of seals compatible with the process fluid, and delivery of the new cylinder accompanied by technical drawings and a test report. This service is particularly valued by customers with older systems that are critical to production.
